Garage Electrical Upgrade & Switchboard Replacement Case Study in St Albans

Garage Electrical Upgrade & Switchboard Replacement Case Study in St Albans

The initial call for assistance was indeed straightforward, involving exposed cabling running from the house to a detached garage. However, upon our arrival at the site, the situation revealed itself to be much more complex than anticipated.

What Issues Did Our Site Inspection Reveal?

The exposed cable was an immediate concern, but our thorough site inspection uncovered several other significant issues. The switchboard had not been inspected or updated in nearly a decade, lacking essential RCDs on individual circuits and modern fault protection measures. Additionally, the cabling within the garage was not only deteriorated but also undersized for current standards. This setup posed not just an aesthetic problem; it represented a serious safety hazard that needed urgent attention.

While on site, we took the opportunity to conduct a complimentary safety check. Alarmingly, we discovered that the smoke alarms installed were ten years past their expiration date, further highlighting the need for prompt action and upgrades to ensure the safety of the premises.

What Electrical Upgrades Did We Implement?

To rectify the existing issues, we completely decommissioned the old cable run extending to the garage and replaced it with a new, upgraded circuit. This new setup is now sized adequately to handle a welder, providing the client with the capacity to utilise the garage space for various purposes in the future.

Inside the garage, we removed the outdated lighting and installed new, energy-efficient fittings along with proper cabling. This upgrade not only improves the overall illumination but also ensures that the lighting is correctly and safely installed.

At the switchboard, we executed a comprehensive upgrade. We replaced the old unit with a modern board featuring individually controlled circuit protection for every circuit. Each circuit is now equipped with its own RCD, ensuring that a fault in one circuit does not affect the entire property, while also complying with current safety standards.

In addition, we replaced the outdated smoke alarms to enhance fire safety within the premises.
