Skip Bag vs Skip Bin: Which is Better for Your Project?

Skip Bag vs Skip Bin: Which is Better for Your Project?

When searching for a skip bin in Sydney, many individuals are unaware that they have two distinct options: the traditional skip bin and the skip bag. Both options come with delivery and collection services, but the practical differences are significant. Here’s a comprehensive comparison before you make your decision.

Understanding Traditional Skip Bins and Their Hidden Complexities

Traditional skip bins are robust steel containers delivered by a truck equipped with a hydraulic arm. These bins generally range in size from 2m³ to 12m³ or larger. A truck drops off the bin, you fill it at your convenience over the rental period, and it is collected once you're finished.

In Sydney, you must consider the permit requirements. Many local councils mandate a permit if the bin is placed on the nature strip or street. This is particularly relevant in older suburbs where options are limited. Terraces, semi-detached homes, and units with shared driveways often necessitate placing the bin kerbside. The permit usually costs around $160, in addition to the bin hire fees.

There’s also the potential for driveway damage. The heavy steel base of the skip can leave marks or even crack surfaces when placed on concrete, brick pavers, or exposed aggregate.
If your driveway has just been painted or sealed, consider placing a large tarp underneath to protect it.

One crucial aspect that often goes unmentioned until it's too late is that a skip bin left accessible to the public for several days becomes a target for unwanted rubbish. Neighbours may use it to dispose of their junk, and if the bin exceeds its weight or volume limits, you will incur additional charges.

How Does a Skip Bag Operate?

A skip bag is a durable, flexible bag delivered flat to your property. You can fill it at your own pace, whether that takes an afternoon, a day, or a weekend. Once you're ready, we will collect it using a crane.

The bag must remain on private property, such as your driveway, front yard, or garage.
It cannot be placed on the footpath, nature strip, or road. For terrace homes without driveways, a small front garden is often suitable, as the crane arm can easily reach over the fence.
Ensure there is approximately 3 metres of clear space around the bag for our truck to manoeuvre effectively.

The crane arm requires 9 metres of vertical clearance above the bag. This restriction rules out locations directly beneath powerlines, cables, awnings, or large overhanging branches.
Most standard driveways and front yards will work, but it's wise to check above before confirming your chosen spot. If you're uncertain about your property, feel free to call us for guidance before delivery.

Because the bag remains on your property rather than the street, you won't need a council permit, and you won't lose parking space. The bag's material is designed not to mark or crack your paving. Plus, since it's on your property and can be filled quickly and removed the same day, there's no opportunity for others to dump their rubbish in it at late hours.

Managing Green Waste: What You Need to Know

It’s important to note that several councils in Sydney do not provide green waste collection, or they may only offer it seasonally. If you have recently tackled a significant pruning job, cleared out a garden bed, or had a tree removed, you may find yourself with a considerable amount of green waste and no clear way to dispose of it.

Using a skip bag for green waste eliminates the need for a permit and the uncertainty of waiting for a council collection that may not happen. You can fill the bag with branches, lawn clippings, and other garden debris, and we will collect it at your convenience.
The medium or large skip bag is typically suitable for most garden cleanouts, while the small bag tends to fill up more quickly than expected when dealing with branches.

Permitted and Prohibited Items in a Skip Bag

Most types of waste are acceptable in a skip bag. there are certain items we cannot take for environmental and safety reasons.
We accept: general household rubbish, timber and wood, bricks and concrete, tiles and flooring, garden and green waste, plasterboard and drywall, metal and piping, cardboard and packaging, renovation debris, furniture, and whitegoods.

We cannot accept: asbestos, chemicals and solvents, liquid paint, oil and fuel drums, medical waste, tyres, batteries, gas bottles, food waste, perishables, animal remains, or mattresses.

Mattresses are a common point of confusion; while they cannot go in the skip bag, they are perfectly acceptable for a junk collection service. We will discuss this option further below.

Understanding Weight Limits: Why They Are Crucial

Skip bags are billed based on weight rather than volume.
Every bag comes with a weight allowance — 200kg for the small bag, 400kg for the medium, and 600kg for the large. If your load exceeds this allowance upon collection, an overweight charge will be added to your invoice within 24 hours.

For general waste, the fee is $75 for every 100kg over your included allowance. For heavy inert waste such as bricks, concrete, and tiles, the charge is $50 per 100kg over.

This is where customers sometimes receive unexpected charges. Light, bulky items like timber offcuts, cardboard, and general household rubbish usually remain within the weight limit.
denser items can be misleading; concrete often weighs more than anticipated, and an old treadmill can weigh as much as 150kg on its own.

If you have heavy items like mattresses or treadmills and are uncertain about the weight, consider opting for our truck service instead.
We charge based on volume for truck collections, so heavy items won’t incur extra fees. A two-person crew will come to your property, load everything, and take it away.

When to Choose a Junk Collection Service

If you need to dispose of heavy or awkward items like mattresses or treadmills, or if your load is large and uncertain, book the truck service.
If you prefer not to lift anything yourself, definitely opt for the truck.

A skip bag is ideal if you want to fill it at your own pace, have a general idea of what you need to dispose of, and the weight is manageable.
The truck service is preferable for larger, heavier jobs, or if you want everything taken care of in one visit without the hassle.
